Charles Attersoll Smith

Lt Col Charles Attersoll Smith VD was born 25 May 1858 the son of a solicitor and sometime mayor of Reigate, Charles Joseph Smith and his wife Frances in Reigate, Surrey. 

Leaving merchant Taylors’ in 1875 he followed into the family trade, qualifying as a solicitor in 1881. He joined the family firm, which became known as Attersolls, and is today part of TWM Solicitors. He was elected Chairman of Holmesdale Building Society between 1924 and 1929, was Clerk to the Governors of Reigate Grammar School and Treasurer of the Reigate Literary Institution.

He also joined the territorials, rising to command the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, the Royal West Surrey Regiment.

He married Anne Stanley Wyndham on 24 April 1884 at St Luke’s Chelsea.

He was Master of the Lodge in 1896. His mother lodge was Surrey Lodge No 416 in Reigate, of which Lodge he was Master in 1889. The Province of Surrey made him a Junior Grand Deacon. He was also in Chapter, and was Provincial Grand Registrar for Surrey.

He died on 29 November, at home in Reigate, aged 70.
